Best places to walk around Godalming and Haslemere

There are some incredible places to get out and about in and around Godalming and Haslemere, please find a few of our favourites below:
Guildford – Godalming along the River Wey
The River Wey cuts through our local area and offers waterside walks that appeal to all family groups.
Why we love it
This walk is 5 miles along the towpath so quite long, however, if you live in or between these superb Surrey towns, you can hop on and off and still enjoy many aspects of this walk. Starting at Guildford, you follow the river out past the old Watermill (part of Yvonne Arnaud’s Theatre) towards Godalming. Along the route, you experience some of Surrey’s finest villages, rural views, locks and small bridges you can cross. The route enters Godalming through Catteshall and Farncombe boathouse.
Top Family Tip: Most children are fascinated about how locks work and there are two to enjoy on this route.
Devils Punchbowl / Hindhead Common
Hindhead Common and The Devil’s Punch Bowl have the most spectacular views and wonderful walking opportunities across open heathland and through shady woodland.
Why we love it
This is a well sign-posted but not too demanding walk offering stunning views from Gibbet Hill and The Temple of Four Winds – and you can even see the London skyline on a clear day! Just over three miles will offer you tranquillity, splendid seasonal colours and a chance to truly appreciate our stunning surroundings.
Winkworth Arboretum
Walks around Godalming would not be right unless you include The National trust’s Winkworth Arboretum with its varied walks stunning seasonal colours and impressive landscapes.
Why we love it
Autumn is really where this park comes alive with the fiery contrasting colours of its trees and shrubs however it is still a fabulous walk any time of year. This selection of walks is less challenging and more about getting out and appreciating Godalming’s finest. The walks are colour coded with blue being the shortest, less challenging route and red being the more challenging, longer but equally rewarding travail. Our favourite is the in-between yellow route as it is 1.6km long and offers some truly breath-taking lake views.
Fun Fact: Winkworth Arboretum covers 121 acres and exhibits over 1,000 species of trees and shrubs.
Black Down
Set in the South Downs, Black Down is a picturesque wood and Heathland offering spectacular views and a range of walks for all abilities.
Why we love it
This ‘Temple of the Winds’ walk is suitable for most abilities and is just over 2 miles long. This is relatively easy travail does involve a hill climb but is rewarded by some of the most breath-taking views across the South Downs. You can pause for thought at the top on the bench provided and soak in the views and atmosphere, which is said to have inspired Tennyson.
Top Tip for the kids: Go on a hunt to find hidden treasures and evidence of prehistoric settlements. The National Trust as a great video to get the kids engaged!
