Guildford Castle to St Catherine’s Chapel
From the stunning Guildford Castle grounds to the local countryside, this has something for everyone.
Why we love it
This walk takes you from Guildford Castle along down Pewley Hill, Pewley Down into Shalford and along St Catherine’s and back again. Once again, this is an easy route to hop on and off if you do not want to complete it in its entirety. It is 5 ½ miles long taking you from the castle, along our lovely villages, countryside and the ruins of St Catherine’s chapel on the return leg.
Top Tip: You can stop for a coffee at The Snooty Fox in Shalford (check opening hours) for a quick rest on this route.s) for a quick rest on this route.
The Mount
A picturesque grassland area one mile west of the Guildford town centre, the Mount offers woodland walks, impressive flowers (seasonal) and some of the best views of the town and surrounding area.
Why we love it
This walk should take about 1 hour in total, starts close to Guildford station and offers plenty to capture a child’s imagination. With some exciting historical events such as Bronze age urns containing burnt bones being found here to bloody battles between locals and 15,000 Cornish rebels in 1497, this walk has something for everyone.
Fun Fact for the kids: If walking with children, ask them to keep an eye out for the commemorative stone marking the date of the battle between the locals and Cornish rebels.
St Martha’s Hill
Set in between Guildford and Chilworth, St Martha’s Hill offers stunning panoramic views over numerous counties.
Why we love it
Not only are the views spectacular, but this can also be a journey of discovery as well. St Martha’s Hill offers a chance to explore one of the most spectacular wild landscapes of Britain – the High Weald. which is hugely fascinating and worth finding more about.
This walk is can be a bit hilly and in total lasts 3 hours, so not for the faint-hearted but you are well rewarded with the panoramic views out across the Surrey Hills, which reputedly, extends across five other English counties.

Newlands corner
Set on the top of a hill managed by Surrey Wildlife Trust for nature conservation and public enjoyment, you have breath-taking views, woodland and rare wildlife to explore.
Why we love it
Short and sweet, and perfect for family walks, this 2-mile circular adventure is not too challenging, has a coffee shop en-route (check opening hours beforehand) and a bench to stop off and rest.
Interesting fact: The area became famous in 1926 when it was the location for the staged disappearance of celebrity novelist, Agatha Christie. She caused a huge search of the Downs when it was feared she had been murdered.
