Originally built in 1730 as a simple farm cottage, the front of the house features traditional ironstone walls, once believed to ward off evil spirits. The property was later upgraded for middle-class residence following the arrival of the railways in the 1860s.

Brookbank is best known for its association with renowned novelist George Eliot. During the summer of 1871, Eliot and her partner G.H. Lewes rented the property while their London home was being renovated. It was here that she wrote much of Middlemarch, one of the greatest novels in English literature. In recognition of its historical importance, the house was awarded a Haslemere Society Blue Plaque in September 2008.
