Sprucing up your outdoor space could add value to your home.

Many tenants and buyers registered with Seymours Haslemere are searching for a home with outdoor space and well-maintained gardens, great and small, are sought after.

Your outdoor space could have a surprising impact on the price of your property, so a spruce up this summer could be well worth the investment.

Demand for outdoor space

A recent Rightmove survey revealed that 63 percent of homebuyers claimed having access to a garden or outdoor space is a priority, especially in post-pandemic living.

According to Joss Cooper, co-owner of Seymours Haslemere, useable and well cared for outdoor space will make a property ‘more desirable’ and no doubt ‘add value’.

He said: “It’s not just the outside space that you have, but it’s how you maximise it that matters. We recently marketed a Haslemere property with a beautifully designed terrace garden which sold for over the asking price.

“Properties with garden offices are also snapped up, as hybrid working has become the norm. There is also competition for homes with traditional English country gardens as green space is more attractive than ever before.”

Simple spruce up

If you are planning to sell or let your property this summer, there are some easy improvements that you can make to your outside space to help you achieve the best possible price for your home.

Conservatories

If you have a conservatory, showcase this room in its best light. Clean the windows so that prospective buyers or tenants can enjoy the view. Make sure that this space is clutter free and comfortable, so that it creates a space for relaxation.

Tidy garden

A well-maintained garden is far more attractive than an overgrown green space full of rubbish and toys. It is essential that you mow the lawn and tidy flower beds. You could even add a splash of colour with potted flowers.

Fencing

A lick of paint can transform an old fence and provide a striking backdrop for greenery and plants. Choose the colour of your fence carefully as some shades could make your outside space look bigger.

Entertainment area

Consider creating or improving space available for outdoor entertaining. Add a seating area for lounging, a dining area for alfresco eating, or fire pit for garden gatherings.

Baskets and accessorise

If your garden or terrace is looking a little dull, plant some hanging baskets to add some instant colour. Accessorise with lanterns or outdoor cushions to add a touch of style.
