Surrey lifestyle: The 9 secret spots you might not know about

Take the road less travelled for a change.

Surrey is famous for its scenic walks, quaint English pubs and historic market towns. Whilst not quite as crowded as the capital, the area still attracts hordes of visitors throughout the year. In such close proximity to London, the quick travel times to such stunning countryside has certainly seen the area grow in popularity for a short escape from the daily hustle and bustle.

Living in Surrey, you may occasionally want to get away from the better known spots to somewhere a little more hidden away. The vibrant Surrey lifestyle is one in high-demand, but of course, as a local you may sometimes find yourself caught in the crowds. So, in today’s Seymours blog we’re sharing a few hidden gems, taking you off the beaten path and allowing you to discover your own secret spots that can offer you much-needed R&R time and again.

#1 Ramster Gardens

If you’re on the hunt for your very own ‘secret garden’ then look no further! Ramster is a beautiful woodland garden covering over 25 acres offering absolute tranquility. Natural winding paths will take you through endless spring delights, with stunning bluebells, daffodils and primroses at every turn. Bring along a picnic blanket and while away a few hours beneath the towering ancient magnolia trees and reconnect with nature as you forget the hustle and bustle of the everyday Surrey lifestyle.

The gardens are open everyday throughout the Spring but in Summer and Autumn are limited to Wednesday to Sunday. You’ll want to come back time and again to witness the colour transition from bright blues and pinks to fiery rusts and yellows. As the weather begins to cool after sunshine-filled days, you can cosy up in the delightful teahouse too with specialty soups to warm chilly hands!

#2 The Albany

A picturesque riverside retreat, ideal for a light lunch or delicious cocktail (or two!) whilst soaking in the sunshine. This stylish pub provides you glorious views of the River Thames and located just outside Thames Ditton, is the perfect pit stop after a day exploring the historic grounds of Hampton Court or walking around Bushy Park.

It’s definitely a spot to impress, so consider surprising your visitors or try this wonderful pub for your next date night, a hidden gem away from the crowded restaurants dotted around the town.

#3 Two Ducks

If you’re in search of unique gifts, homeware and fashion from some of the best British designers, you’ll want to pay a visit to Two Ducks in Woking. And, whilst browsing the gorgeous boutique items, you can tuck into a sweet treat at the luxury on-site cafe! Boutique shopping certainly defines the Surrey lifestyle, but avoid the crowds and find this secret hideaway for a wonderful experience.

The gorgeously scented candles, welcoming team and ambient jazz invites you in, making it easy to while away a few hours any day of the week. Plus, there’s a whole host of workshops provided throughout the year from bubbly-fuelled twilight shopping to home and fashion styling events.

#4 Amor Amora

Breakfast connoisseurs must pay a visit to this hidden gem, nestled at the very top of the historic Guildford high street. Wandering up the cobblestone streets to this cosy corner, you’ll be met with a warm welcome and artisanal dishes made with only organic and locally-sourced ingredients.

As we’ve mentioned, breakfast is certainly the cafe’s speciality! Served until 2pm, with an extension to all day on Sunday, customers can choose from Paris, Athens, Valencia, New York or the most popular, Guildford for the start of their day.

#5 Silent Pool

Silent Pool was likely an old chalk quarry fed by underground springs and would have been a precious source of pure water for those in the area in days gone by. Meandering the trails, you may even catch a glimpse of a kingfisher, dashing across the water to fish in the abundant pond – ideal for taking your little ones to see impressive local wildlife!

Looking out over the still water surrounded by evergreen trees, there’s a slight eerie-ness to the area. Legend has it that this is due to the fate of a woodcutter’s daughter who was surprised by a nobleman on a horse as she bathed in the pool. Having failed to lure her to the bank, he rode his horse into the water and caused the girl to move out to deeper water where she drowned. When the woodcutter returned and found her body, he also found the nobleman’s hat floating on the water. Strictly no swimming allowed!

#6 Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden

A magical world away, this sculpture garden is unlike any other marrying together nature and art in a very unique way. First opened to the public 35 years ago, the contemporary art on display is ever-changing making every visit just as special as the first.

It’s certainly off the beaten path, and you’ll feel transported away as you lose yourself amongst the 200 sculptures on display. Bring a homemade picnic along and send hours soaking in the sunshine in this gorgeous display garden.

#7 Stephan Langton Inn

Surrounded by ancient woodland, this secluded pub is a hidden gem nestled in the centre of the Surrey Hills. Just a short walk from the popular Leith Hill, you’ll find this secret spot – ideal for refuelling after a hike around the countryside.

The menu features modern British cuisine with ingredients sourced from local suppliers where possible and there’s a wide selection of guest beers to be found throughout the year. Our team particularly loves the signature pie: The Archbishop’s Pie, which includes steak, pheasant breast, mushroom and ‘Black Troll’ ale. Cosy up after a long hike through the woodland in this delightful setting.

#8 The Deepdene Trail

Explore the stunning landscape in the Deepdene estate gardens free of charge. Steeped in history, nature and hidden treasures, the spot is just a 15 minute walk away from Dorking high street.

Features include a romantic tower, magnificent grotto and 19th century Hope Mausoleum that’s sure to ‘wow’ you. Ensure you don’t miss a beat with the trial app, but don’t worry this spot remains quiet throughout the seasons so you can escape the crowds.

#9 The Mill

Sit by the River Wey in this unique converted corn mill and enjoy a delicious freshly cooked meal and glass of exquisite wine. The blissful surroundings are sure to make you forget about your busy Surrey lifestyle for a little while, leaving you refreshed to take on the rest of the week.
