We Love Godalming: The Perfect Place To Buy Or Rent Property

Godalming is an ancient market and coaching town, situated on the picturesque River Wey, just 30 miles from London.

Our property experts are all passionate about working in such a fantastic town with its amazing community, stunning countryside, range of independent shops and superb gastro pubs. Residents are able to enjoy exciting festivals throughout the year such as Staycation and Music in the Park by the town’s bandstand.

Over the last twelve months we have experienced a surge in demand for both property for sale and property to rent in Godalming and the surrounding villages. Families and professionals are increasingly attracted to the area and here we look at what makes it such a special place to live.

Fantastic Attractions & Schools

Being part of the Surrey Hills means that residents have access to many scenic areas. Not far from the town centre is the River Wey, popular with boaters, canoeists, walkers, cyclists, and joggers. There are numerous other attractions such as the Godalming Museum, a range of excellent sports facilities, and the National Trust owned Winkworth Arboretum.

Families have a fantastic choice of nursery, primary and secondary schools such as the award-winning St Hilary’s Prep School for boys and girls aged 2-11, Prior’s Field School for girls aged 11+, along with the well-regarded Busbridge Infant School, both Busbridge and Godalming Junior Schools and also Godalming Sixth Form College.

Seymours Estate Agents, Godalming

Our office is situated opposite the Pepperpot, which is an iconic building in the centre of Godalming. Aptly named because its turret is shaped like a Georgian pepper pot. It is extensively used for meetings, markets, and town events. Being in the heart of Godalming has enabled us to become part of the local community and we are delighted to be the main club sponsor for Farncombe Youth Football Club, and we also support The Prostate Project and The Meath Epilepsy Charity.

Helen Jackson, Marketing and Communications Manager for The Meath commented: “Working with supportive local organisations and businesses is absolutely key to our ability to maintain a high profile and to help us bring in vital funds through fundraising activities. Seymours Godalming have been of great support by attending our fundraising events, holding an office mufti day for us and during lockdown they kindly helped us keep up our profile by screening our short film on their TV screens. It really is invaluable to have a friendly and approachable team who are keen to lend their support whenever possible.”

Fascinating History

Godalming has an incredible history and there are five conservation areas in and around the town and more than 350 listed buildings. We love the abundance of historic architecture along the High Street and Church Street, which feature in the popular festive film The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz and Jude Law.

In 1881 Godalming became the first place in the world to have public electricity. The local museum notes this historic milestone and also showcases the interesting work of Gertrude Jekyll who was the garden designer for Edwin Lutyens’ commissions in the area. It also tells the story of Jack Phillips, the wireless operator who was aboard the Titanic.

Godalming Property Market

Ian Bond, Co-Owner of Seymours Godalming, shares his thoughts on the local market:

In today’s busy market, some properties are achieving more than the asking price. These properties often receive significant interest, generating competition between buyers, and ultimately leading to a number of offers from interested parties. Where multiple offers have been received, resulting sales have been agreed from around 5% to 10% above the asking price.

When obtaining a valuation and appointing an estate agent it is really important to consider their track record when it comes to selling. According to official Rightmove figures, our team at Seymours Godalming have achieved more sales agreed than any other local estate agent over the past 12 months. The data covers the GU8 4, GU8 5, GU8 6, GU7 2, GU7 3, GU7 1, and GU3 1 postcode patches, with prices up to £10,000,000, between 14/06/2020 – 14/06/2021.
