Why move to Godalming?

Here are a few more reasons to make the move there:

History

From the notable 1814 pink Pepperpot building in the centre of the town, to the stone statue in Nightingale Cemetery Chapel that commemorates Jack Phillips (the telegraphist on the ill-fated Titanic) and author Aldous Huxley’s resting place at Watts Cemetery in Compton, Godalming is steeped in history.

Hollywood connections

Godalming’s picturesque streets and surrounding countryside have been featured in many a blockbuster film from romantic festive flick The Holiday with Cameron Diaz and Jude Law, to St Trinian’s 2, starring Gemma Arterton and Colin Firth, which was filmed at Charterhouse School.

Café culture

Godalming’s High Street and adjoining passages are filled with places that you can sit and watch the world go by. Tucked away in Angel Court, you’ll find Café Mila with its healthy snacks and upstairs yoga studio, while Godalming Museum on the High Street serves fresh coffee and tea from its café within the ground floor exhibition space, enabling you to view the latest exhibition while you enjoy a cuppa.

River life

Described as one of Surrey’s best kept secrets, the River Wey offers loads of opportunity to have fun and enjoy the gorgeous countryside from the tranquillity of the water. At Farncombe Boat House, just five minutes’ drive from Godalming town centre, you can rent a rowing boat for the day or book a week-long narrow boat cruise and explore the Wey navigations and more.

Independent High Street

Peer inside many of the High Street’s Tudor casement windows and you’ll find yet another reason to love this town – a fabulous array of independent shops. From those that have been in the town for decades, such as Record Corner and DIY store Cornmeter to those which have popped up in more recent years, such as deli The Godalming Food Company and interior store Wattle & Daub, independent retailers are thriving. There’s a number of standalone restaurants scattered across the town too, such as Spanish fusion restaurant Acorn and Piazza Firenze.
